The effective agent of plantain - glycoside aukubin - has strong antibacterial effects comparable to antibiotics. In addition the mucous agents in plantain are useful during supportive treatment of the disease of upper airways. The effective agent in thyme is essential oil which contains a number of terpenic substances such as thymol, karvakrol and cineol. It is effective against majority of common microorganisms, which cause inflammation of the upper respiratory system. Among the content agents in Echinacea exists a number of interesting substances of polysaccharide character, which can stimulate the immune system. Effective agents in sage (essential oil) have a general disinfection and anti-inflammatory effects, and are used against inflammation and injuries of the mouth, after dental operations, and as supportive medicament in the case of sore throat and colds.
